Trigger Foods

by Tan Yew Wei on May 29, 2010

For many people, there is this class of foods which are deemed as trigger foods. Basically, these foods somehow make you want to eat more instead of satisfying you.

Ever pick up a cookie, thinking that you could just eat one, and eating 10 instead? Or tell yourself that you were just going to eat half the bag of chips?

We can talk about how certain macronutrients stimulate ghrelin secretion more than others, how food volume affects satiety, how dopamine response to feeding is impaired in some people, or how the psychology of business affects some people positively and others negatively, but I think that’s all missing the point.

Just accept that trigger foods exist, find out what yours are, and do something about it.

Of course, that’s easier said than done. When it comes to controlling their minds, people like to think that they’re in more control than they really are. We tend to forget that our conscious mind only owns 3% real estate of our brain.

Still, that’s the only 3% we get to work with, so let’s make the best of it. In this case, start with a period of total abstinence. That’s right, NO COOKIES FOR 3 WEEKs.

In the meantime, try out various psychological tricks, and be willing to experiment with your wants and desires. Be willing to do that, and realise that this sort of thing takes time. Most importantly, never act like you’re a victim; you’re not going to get pity from anyone anyway.
