The 3 part Counting Calories Series

by Tan Yew Wei on August 15, 2009

The aim of this series is to address possible questions about mastering the ability to count calories.

In this 3 part series, I will address these 3 issues in 3 different posts:

  1. What is a calorie and Why Should We Count Calories
  2. How to count calories
  3. How much are you eating?

A Short Primer

Food provides energy.

And that’s what Calories are all about, they are just a measurement of energy.

Your body needs energy every day, and this is provided from various sources of food which contain calories.

So we can say: this apple contains 100 calories. Or today I burned 3000 calories.

Equally valid is to say that today I burned 30 apples worth of energy.

Of course, we all probably know that a burger provides more energy than a carrot. More specifically, the burger tends to give more calories per unit mass.

Of course that’s just scratching the surface, so stay tuned for the rest of the series……
