What the internet means for health (and almost everything in general) – the short version

A short post, and a quick summary.

We obviously know that the internet has changed the way we work. There is too much choice, there is too little time. There is too much connectivity, there is too little credibility. So what does this mean for the general health of the population?

I think there are 5 big trends that are good and another 5 which are bad, and overall only a single message.

Here’s the list:

The Bad:

  1. lots and lots of junk info (which mislead you)
  2. lots and lots of ads (which are false)
  3. lots and lots of opinions (which mislead you more!)
  4. less and less time (which means you need to pick and choose)
  5. more and more carpal tunnel syndrome (and problems related to a sedentary lifestyle)

The Good:

  1. Easy access of information (Just a click away)
  2. Easy creation of networks (think Alcoholics Anonymous extended to obese people)
  3. Extension of those networks to the real world (Think forums, think participation, think encouragement, and think progress)
  4. Free access to information (just need to pay for internet access – or sit at your nearby Starbucks)
  5. Ideas spread (but not necessarily good ones)

The Revelation:

Nobody cares about you, but it is a lot easier to care about yourself (and others if you choose)

What that means right now:

Take charge of your health and do something! Even getting up from your seat to take a stretch is positive action.

long version to follow…..

“it's a lot easier to care about yourself” ??

Please do the math: if 7 billion people are not caring about you.
This means 7 billion people are poisoning your air, your water and your food, and running machines and engines (such as guns or cars) without care. All this is having a huge chance to making you sick or dead.
Then how come the action of one little single person, yourself, could reverse the combined actions of 7 billion barbarians?

I suspect you have watched far too many american movies, where a superhero saves the world on his own!
